It's that time of year when the beautiful blooms are gone and it's time to start planning for next years garden.
I find that each year produces an extraordinary flower or fruit different from the last. I keep in mind which ones are so prolific and save the seeds for the coming season.
For this year it was Marigolds. My father-in-law just discovered his love for flowers after retiring and planted every seed in the packs he could find. He gave me trays of these tall, bushy marigolds that took quite a while to bloom. We nicknamed them giants because they were extraordinarily large. They were so worth the wait. My birdbath never looked more beautiful than with the giant yellow blooms near the bowl and complete greenery all the way around.
I'm saving the seeds from the best for next year. I leave them on the plant until spent. I then break them apart on a paper towel in the house for a few days. I seal my precious jewels in an airtight jar to spend the winter months. This can be done with any non hybrid variety of seeds.
This is a great way to share with family and friends the most bountiful and beautiful of the season!

Seed Saving
