Marigolds in November (Calendula officinalis)

This has been a strange year for my flowers.  During the hot summer months, most were beautiful but some flowers really struggled that normally flourish.  A prime example were the Geraniums, which by the way, are bigger and more beautiful than ever now that it is cool to cold!  I can't help but giggle at the planter by my porch.  It is full of Geraniums and standing tall in back is a giant Marigold.  This picture was taken 2 days ago, November 22nd, 2009.  Standing tall and proud against the frosts we have been experiencing!

Whether you are a experienced gardener or a novice, Marigolds are always a wonderful choice for bedding plants.  There are many solid colors and color variations as well as varied height ranges to choose from.  Unscented marigold inter-planted in a garden not only add beauty and depth but aid in pest control.  They are semi-drought tolerant, survive a wide range of temperatures (obvious by mine this year) and the seeds are extremely easy to save and plant for the following year making them a frugal flower choice as well.

Marigolds have many uses as well as being beautiful.  You can use them for soothing tired winter skin in the bath, for bruises, burns, in cleansing lotions, for cuts, in facial steam baths, hand oil, moisturizer, on age spots and drink as a tea.

Add this beautiful herb/flower to your border and/or garden plans next year and you won't be disappointed!
